Plastic is the commonly used material with the multiple benefits. The use of the pesticides is rife due to its durability, lightweight, and relatively inert nature. Plastic is cheap compared to various metal. Unlike other metal available plastic can be changed into varied forms by using the scant amount of energy. Due to varied benefit from the plastic, its use has been accelerating. Plastic contains the polymers made up of the element of carbon, hydrogen nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen.
Due to high durable nature plastic remains in the atmosphere for the longer period of time. These are the prime cause of pollution and due to the massive use of plastic Small Island of plastic are forming in the ocean. The problem is getting worst when the marine fauna consume plastic material as they mimic the food source.
Genetically engineered bacteria are developed to enhance the degradation process of the plastic but due to highly expensive nature, it is not feasible to operate (1). The chemical leached from the plastic is believed to be the potent carcinogen (2)
The first synthetic plastic was manufactured in by Leo Baekeland in 1907 at the New York (3). Since the discovery the use of the plastic is on the massive scale virtually eliminating all the material like wood, various metal etc. previously used.
Plastic is classified into different types based on the chemical structure. They are classified into two types one is the thermoplastics and thermosetting. The thermoplastics are those, which the chemical structure did not alter while heating. They can be changed to varied shape multiple times whereas the thermosetting are the whereas which can only be melted once.
Formation of Plastic
The ethylene and propylene obtained from the petroleum refining provide the raw material for the manufacture of the plastic. There is the need to combine this chemical with other chemicals in order to obtain the plastic. The polymers are the long chain and often refer commonly as the plastic.
Recycling of the Plastic
Plastic bottles are often not recycled because using the virgin plastic is less expensive than used one. Less than ten percent of plastic around the globe is recycled every year and rest remains in the earth as the pollutant.
There are various alternative options available for the plastic substitute. Using the durable paper bag, using the glass bottle instead of plastic bottle, can replace the plastic bag, using bamboo material a variety of substitute available for plastic like the Carpet, mat, and curtain etc. stainless steel for storing container, toys made from wood, paper, and other recycled items can prove to be good substitute of the plastic.
